Tiller truck man Fire station 7

The Tiller truck man of Truck 7 is trying to get the Truck back into the Fire station after I photographed it.

SFFD is one of a very small number of departments still operating tiller aerials exclusively. LA city is another.

Most operate either all stick - like Chicago or Boston - or a mix of types. FDNY for example has rearmount aerials, midmount towers and a handful of tillers. These are at stations which serve parts of the city where a more maneuverable aerial is needed, such as Chinatown in Mannhattan...

As for the tillerman "trying" to back the truck into the bay, I think San Francisco's ladder company tillermen are amazingly expert when it comes to steering these beasts. They do get an awful lot of practice!
