Engine 28 KME San Francisco Fire Department

When I visited pier 39 in San Francisco I heard some sirens. Suddenly it stopped and after a few oment this KME pump came around the corner. The fire fighters responded to a automatic alarm in one of the offices. I talked to the driver of this engine. This KME is underpowered for the city of San Francisco with the steep hills.

Sorry, that is a Ferrara pumper mounted on an short wheelbased HME chassis.

This is very much a "one off" rig. I think that SFFD wanted to assess whether smaller engines would be effective. Hence, it's been at stations whee it would best utilized and not at one of the high volume ones.

I'm not sure where it is in it's operational life, but I suspect that its closing in, if not already in its final cycle. All SFFD appliances are expected to last 4x6year cycles (yes, 24 years) in which they are cycled downward to stations with progressively fewer calls.
