Unknown Fire Engine

Could anybody please help to Identify this fire engine. I can't make out the regestration number due to the photo being very dark looks like it ends in 34, and I'm unsure of the brigade crest on the cab. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks Paul.

I am pretty sure its a Miles bodied Commer QX and was likely to have run as either a Pump Escape or Water Tender. From the crest and the slip board holder for the station name on the side of the cab it looks like it could be ex Somerset. I don't know if Somerset had a Commer with its number plate ending in 34 but they did have XYC104 which was a Pump Escape at Shepton Mallett.

The crest could be a rearing horse "Invicta" as used in Kent. Kent FB did have a number of Miles bodied Commers, which is what this appliance looks like to me.

Paul, It's an ex Somerset Commer C series.
I have looked for the reg but can't find one that matches (34). Clive Curtis might be able to help.

I would agree with George that it's a Somerset machine going by the style of name plate and also type of blue light. Most of the Kent Commer K1's had acorn blue lights mounted on a tripod type bracket. The Invicta crest was (and still is) a white horse on red background.

I agree with you Mike....my first thought when I saw the crest, and Commer has my money...it looks like an off set starting handle which Commers had.

This is a Somerset Commer/Miles registration SYC134. The photo is taken at Hestercombe House near Taunton which is where at the time the Brigade's HQ and workshops were based. I would guess the appliance has been taken off the run and is awaiting its fate prior to disposal by the Brigade. They also had SYC132 and SYC133. Just to correct the above comment XYC104 was never based at Shepton Mallet but I have posted a photo on this site of when it was on the run there as a reserve.

Gentlemen, many thanks to you all for the information on this appliance, I put the wrong name when I posted it by mistake, sorry Paul Pickford.

Yes, it's an ex-Somerset Commer/Miles registered SYC 134 as Paul so correctly says above. I think it was new to Somerton, where it served virtually all of its operational life before dropping to a reserve.

Thanks for the correction, Paul W,; I was wondering how come Paul P. appeared "to be talking to him-self" in the messages !

Thanks again Gents for the information and sorry for the confusion Pat. Good to hear you back Ian.

Ian
Given your info shown above about SYC134 do you have any more information on the allocations of Commers in Somerset. I'm currently working on a fleet list for each station going as far back as I can and although I have some information on what Commer's were where I still have large gaps. Perhaps you could contact me on [email protected] thanks
