Why does Kent have 3 different platforms for tenders - Scania, Volvo & Dennis?

The volvo appliances are only assigned as retained pumps, and they are meant to be assigned to the same station for approx 10yrs with out replacing.They are relatively cheap and easy to maintain. The Scania's and Dennis are used by the whole time stations as they are reliable and can handle all the rescue equipment etc. They stay whole time until newer ones become available, at which point they are moved to retained stations.
