Range Rover NCC 777R at Deeside

Clwyd fire Service purchased the six wheeled Range Rovers in 1977. NCC 777R replaced the ET at Deeside the other was based at Rhyl. Their intended roll was to be used as rapid intervention appliances (ET) to cover the A55 Expressway; they would be backed up in this roll by the nearest Heavy ET
They later performed a dual roll towing the decontamination Trailer based at Deeside and the control unit trailer based at Rhyl This roll was later cancelled due to constant clutch problems. Two dedicated Bedford tractor units were purchased for the towing the trailers. They were not for the faint hearted driver or oic due to them being top heavy and would roll on bends. as I can vouch for being a L/FM at the time based at Deeside.

Nice photo Herbie, also nice to see a name from my basic training at Rhyl. Are you still doing confined space videos with 18 rated soundtracks!

What year were the L6Rs at Deeside & Rhyl taken out out of service? Was it when the Volvos started appearing? And can anyone tell me what year Deeside had its 1st Open day? 1986 or 87? Thanks

Hi there, we purchased this vehicle on eBay last week and are trying to find out a bit about its history. We know she was based at Rhyl and had a 'sister' vehicle NCC 778R. Can anyone help?

see also picture # 21760 - the other one ended up at Rhone Poulenc.

Great news (especially if you are preserving/restoring), the following will be great sources for information/assistance:
Six Appeal Wheel Group - on line forum
WAFERS (Welsh Area Fire Engine Restoration Society)
Fire Service Preservation Group.
Fire Brigade Society
I believe the sister machine exists, but has been converted to four door configuration and is used for motorsport events.

Thanks John and Peter!
We're not going to completely preserve/restore her as she'll be needed for towing/work, but are aiming to keep as much of her character and history as possible, while still being a practical vehicle for us. Somebody has already converted her to diesel and unfortunately they've used a 6 cylinder york! So we'll probably run this around for a little while and then convert to a TD5 as we're a bit worried about getting spares for the york!
At the moment, she still has the very large on board compressor, which I can't think of a use for at the moment, but I'm not going to rush to remove it. Although red is not the company colours, I've decided that she looks far too pretty to change the colour. Unfortunately the air mast was removed when we got her, which is a bit of a shame, but I will replace it because it will be handy for what we do. Will send in some pics as she progresses!
