Bedford pump escape
This is a Bedford Dennis Miles Pump escape new to the Borough of Brighton Fire Brigade in 1968.The picture was taken in the yard at Roedean.It has Brighton on the door but I think it was stationed at Roedean and ran as a water tender but I can't be to sure as I have very little info on this pump.I do know that after 1974,now part of East Sussex it moved up county to the newly opened Wadhurst station as a water tender.It didn't spend very long here and was replaced by 1980.I know very little about this 'one off' pump and would love to find more info on its Brighton and East Sussex career and what happened to it after leaving service.You never know it may be sitting in a barn wating to be found, one can only hope!

This appliance is a very unique and a one off engine.This is a Bedford T.K M-Series Dennis Pump Escape. During the sixties and very early seventies Dennis introduced a budget market of appliances for brigades that had standardised on the Bedford T.K chassis (this is not a Miles built vehicle) Brighton operated various appliances built by Miles Engineering during the fifties. In the late sixties they operated F.43 Pump Escapes (2) and also Dennis/Jaguar/Pump Escapes (2) and also the lovely Bedford/Dennis Escape. This was laying derelict not far from Brighton, what a lovely interesting appliance to restore for some one. Bob Carver.

Bob, this appliance ended it's service life at Wadhurst as far as I know in the early 1980's. By then it had been converted to carry a standard 35ft alloy ladder. It was not vert good at starting! I can remember helping to push the Bedford to help bump start it on one occasion! When did you last see it near Brighton? I wonder if it is still there?

This appliance I am sure was laying in Davis's Yard in commerce way Lancing. At the time there was also a Brighton f.43 Pump Escape. I was in there stripping (f.43) for parts to rebuild my Dennis f.44 Wrl, I needed body fittings etc.
I have since been told the engines have been cut up.They also had a Ex-Brighton Bedford TD4/Miles Pump Escape in there (Ex-Shoreham Airport).

To answer several queries. There was never a retained crew at Roedean. This appliance did run from Roedean at one time as a Pump Escape but was very under powered and nobody liked driving it. It may have spent some time also at Preston Circus, Brighton and definitely a short time at Hove about 1977 before it was moved elsewhere.

Do you have any info on the Ex Brighton TD4 you mention as being Ex Shoreham Airport? A reg number would be great but a picture would be really great.

Stuart, I do still have the negative of this appliance taken some years ago, but don't have the photo I, believe I gave it to someone. The problem with the negative, it's the old style 126 instamatic slide now very difficult to get printed up. The appliance in question was cut up by Davis's several years ago I don't know if this helps but the engine was highlighted in the original "Miles" brochure of the fifties being a dual water tender escape.
