July 1986 Fire Brigade Soc visit to Carmichael factory, Gregory's Mill St, Worcester. The extraordinary process of creating 6x4 Range Rovers is shown here.
This illustrates that the added on trailing axle is pretty much the same dimensions as the existing factory one. Same suspension, wheel and tires, too.
Retaining the original crew compartment shifts all of the weight of the body and tank onto the two rear axles, especially the trailing axle. This is exacerbated by the additional rear frame overhang. This seems to have resulted in a problematic weight distribution especially compared to the original Range Rover which was 45/55 and handled very well.
Partly because of this configuration, as well as overloading, these had a reputation for excessive roll, although they were still quite fast. A cheap but not entirely successful or satisfactory conversion.
Electronics have made newer third axle conversions much safer, as witnessed by the Rosenbauer 6X6 Sprinter which is in service in Austria and some other places.
