UHN 999G was the 2nd F109 built, chassis No:F109B6.1.0801/102 supplied on 24/1/69, and fitted with a Gywnne High/Low Pressure Pump, 35ft Ajax Ladder, 400 gallon tank.

The other Dennis diesel WT in the Darlington fleet was a 1965 "C" registration with the AEC AV470 diesel engine. This had a ridiculous "backwards" gate five speed manual transmission - especially good motivation to buy an automatic next! Darlington fire crews already had an automatic box Firemaster TTL in 1960, so they were already quite knowledgeable (and perhaps quite keen) when it came to driving automatics. They still stuck to slam lockers, though, and this unit was originally assigned to Borough Road, a 1904 vintage station with very narrow bays - which could have been a bit easier with roller shutters. As they mainly operated in the town, neither carried a PP, although the brigade did have one on a two wheel trailer, which could be towed behind their Land Rover if it was thought it might be useful on a country shout.

This was the first of many Perkins V8 powered appliances - the F registered ERF Snorkel was (uniquely) powered by a Cummins engine, special ordered because of the Cummins engine factory in the town.

Do we know when combined dual pressure pumps were first introduced? They seem to have been commonplace on pumpers in the Netherlands quite early on.
