Ford Transit London Salvage Corps MLC 630V

1982 Aldersgate St, City of London a few hundred yards from their HQ. They were refuelling when they got a call. Can anybody identify the plate on the rear door - is it Hawson or Garner who fitted out LSC damage control units?

Transit light damage control units were built by hawsorn garner and there were three of them each one had a power take off for a 4 kva generator and they each carried 40 plastic and 20 polythene salvage sheets and half a ton of corrigated metal sheets plus assorted power and hand tools, 4 BA sets, 300 ft of fire fighting hose and a high output fan and a portable pump. the transits were supplied by fords special services division and were fitted with larger wheels and heavier brakes, anti roll bars and 5 speed gearboxes with 3 litre v6 petrol engines. each vehicle had a crew of 4 and they were very quick

This SVO Transitoffering made quite a useful firefighting pump, too. But most of them were supplied to factory fire brigades and I don't know of any which went to municipal fire services. The county brigades seemed to prefer Land-Rovers - presumably because of their off-road capabilities.

Not quite right Rob, These Transit's made a good compact fire engine. My old Brigade used them, Somerset had a couple and so did some of the Welsh Brigades! Not sure, but I suspect there were a few doted around some northern brigades as well. The transit in Hereford and Worcester was replaced by Mercedes not a Land Rover!

Good news Matt! I think most of these units you mention were probably supplied after I left Ford, and I lost touch with the SVO crowd. But the V6 Transit was quite a flyer, and for a short while we had a demo unit which I enjoyed driving at weekends! SVO also did a V6 chassis/cab which was bought by some ambulance services.
