Stonefield/CMC Rescue tender DEB 896V

Cambridge 1981. This 6x4 appliance was bodied by CMC of Market Deeping, a local company near Peterborough. They also bodied some other Cambridgeshire appliances at this period, including a rather cumbersome Beford special aplliance and the odd pump. This RT later moved to Wisbech FS.

This - and others like it - had serious stability problems, and were in many cases only operated for a brief period before being withdrawn from service.

The thin tyres, narrow track and considerable height, along with the high center of gravity are rather obvious clues that they could be rather unstable, and apparently this turned out to be the case...

As this replaced a full size Bedford RL ET, it is not unlikely that it tended to be overloaded too, which could not have helped!
