Hi Paul, the primer is as originally designed, prevents (or should prevent) water getting into the engine inlet manifold (the source of the vacuum).

I have bought GXN 220 and have no documentation for this vehicle. I know it was sold at Auction, but wondered if you still had any proof this is GXN 220 as DVLA will not accept it with out documents.

Try Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon. They may be able to verify Chassis number K4/...... and date of manufacture..

These Barton pumps were rated at 350 IGPM at 100 PSI, or 1600 LPM at 7 AT. They were typically fitted to NFS wartime build escape carriers and these 60 ft Merryweather TLs.

Although common in many countries, front mounted pumps were virtually unknown in the UK until these were imported from the US in WWII.

After the war, a very compact 500 GPM Coventry Climax pump was front-mounted on some Land-Rovers and Austin Gypsy appliances, as well as a handful of full-sized machines. A few Magirus high pressure front mounted pumps found their way onto some Manchester Dennis F12 pump escapes, but otherwise the front pump did not find much in the way of takers in the UK.

With the evolution of forward control tilt cabs, they are also quite a rarity everywhere else these days...
