TACR2a - RAF Lossiemouth 09 AY 93
Carmichael Range Rover Truck-Airfield Crash Rescue Mk2a (TACR2a) taken at RAF Lossiemouth just before it's release from active service. Now preserved by me, in full working order. It's a 1989 model with 6x4 wheel drive - third axle is non driven. 3.5ltr V8 Injection engine.

Hi Andrew, been away for a couple of weeks so just seen your question. As I don't use her in 'anger' anymore the tyre wear is acceptable. Although the original Rangemasters were very scuffed on the rear - almost bald! It's probably the set you see here? I have heard reports that the drive axle wheel rims detach and leave the axle in mid air!?? It happened recently on a private airfield in Ulster.See report on SAW Group site. I have seen a number of TACR2's with black wheels on this axle so maybe - according to the picture here - they fatigue/corrode and pop off?

Just a update on the tyres - I fitted a 'new' set of Rangemasters and it rides very well both full & empty. Empty I keep the rears @ 38psi & fronts at the recommended 30psi as stated by the labels on the mudguard. If I fill it with water the rears go up to 40psi.

Walter - can you share with us what this beauty can do? Things like pump and tank capacity, crew seats, equipment, etc?

Sure Rob,
0-60 in about 14.5 secs from standstill with a tail wind! Standard Rover 3.5ltr V8 fuel injection engine with 5 speed gearbox. Crew of 4 but usually 2 in service. Godiva 500 gall per minute pump connected to a 188 gallon water/foam premix tank. Two Angus foam master blabber mouth branches. To empty tank with two branches approx 1.5 minutes and with single branch in use 3.5 minutes approx. Rear stowage compartment holds one fire extinguisher, crash axe, spare hose, searchlight tripod stand, toolbox with basic kit including saws, tin snips and bolt cutter tools. Fire blanket, first aid bag and aircraft guide wands.Also included is a shovel and jack.

They were grand machines Rob. Apart from the wallowing described elsewhere by me and a few other folk.
One design flaw was the electrical layout, any extended use of the area light drained the battery very quickly, there was frankly too much electrical equipment mounted. I remember with shame having to receive a jump start from a police Range Rover once at an RTA. The police vehicle was equipped with extra battery back up for its flood lighting. I seem to remember these were fitted with a standard alternator and the charge was insufficient for the setup.
Also, being petrol engined the consumption is astronomical ( on the Mk1 it had a four speed box ) All in all though it was a vast improvement on previous rescue units. These were coming into service when civil aviation were moving toward RIV types of vehicle, heavier and larger. Thats of course the route now taken by the MOD. Smaller machines have their adherents though, myself included. Aircraft tend to crash on the other side of small farm gates :)
