XKV 33 is a 1959 light pump which saw service with the Riley Company's Dunbar Road,Coventry works. Now on display at Coventry Motor Museum Photographed 11/10/2009
Although some were used by a few public fire brigades, including Devon, the Austin Gypsy pumper was mainly bought by industrial users, and of course Riley was a BMC brand like Austin.
These came in two wheelbase variants, and had a very compact Coventry Climax pump which could deliver 2275 LPM at 7 AT. They could accommodate four crew and either a 300 or 400 liter water tank, with a hose reel system. The lockers held up to 275 meters of 70 mm hose as well as a few items of small gear, and ladders were supplied (or not) according to the customer's requirements.
A good design and a useful little pump, these were however nowhere near as popular as the comparable Land-Rover, which was introduced several years earlier and enjoyed great success with many fire services.
