Marine Co1-The Fireboat John D.Mckean named in memory of Marine Engineer (firefighter) John D.Mckean who was burned by live steam on September 17,1953, in an explosion on the ship the George B.McClellan.
Although fatally injured, McKean heroically remained at his post, vainly trying to keep the vessel under control. Sadly he died on September 22nd,1953.
The Fireboat John D.McKean went into service with the FDNY Marine Division on May 1st,1955 and was built by John H.Mathis Co,of Camden, New Jersey at a cost of $1,426,000.(US Dollars).
The John D.Mckean has an overall length of 128'9",a height of 50',and a speed of 16mph.The four centrifugal Worthington pumps can deliver 19000gpm from the 6 deck monitors which are four manually operated Greenburg monitors, one electrically operated monitor in the tower, and one bow pipe, 5"tip, McIntyre monitor.
On September 11th,2009, a new fireboat was commissioned and should arrive in New York in December,its named after the 343 firefighters who gave their lives on September 11th,2001. The name of the new fireboat is 'Three Four Three' and this new fireboat will be the replacement to the John D.McKean having given over 50-years loyal service to the City of New York.
