Ford WTL at Rye
This Ford was new to the Eastbourne fire Brigade in 1973.Then Eastbourne became part of East Sussex Fire Brigade in 1974. During the late 70's it moved to Rye where it became the 2nd away as it was the only pump that would fit into the station with a13.5m ladder behind the J plate Dennis D which ran as the WT. The Ford was a replacement for an F reg Bedford TK.

cheap and nasty they were, not pleasant to sit in or use , no outward vision, very noisey and very cold in the winter, no headroom and they rusted terribly, apart from that they were ok - the engine sounded nice though!

This was bodied by Carmichael and was almost the same as one for Hastings borough stationed at Halton.

It does look claustrophobic, but some bodybuilders managed to equip D series appliances with quite nice crewcabs.

If it was a 1317 with the Perkins V8 510, then it might well have been noisy, because this engine was notorious for the racket it produced!
Several manufacturers in addition to Ford used it in fire appliance chassis at the time, including Dennis, Dodge, ERF and Shelvoke, so quite a lot of fire crews had to put up with its noise!
The 1014 had the Ford 360 CID turbo engine, which was whisper quiet by comparison, but only 140 BHP compared to 170 for the Perkins V8....

picture 24024 on this site has a D1014 with HCB Angus bodywork, which is a much more nicely integrated job than the Carmichael effort. It not only looks better but adds another window for the crew. In addition, the Ford six cylinder turbo in the D1014 was actually quite quiet - a much more pleasant experience than the optional Perkins V8, which was notoriously noisy!
