Pete; another aspect of the long overhang...when responding on a call, the Driver has to calmly pull the rig absolutely dead straight out of the bay, until the ladder is clear of the door jambs.
The temptation to expedite and turn onto the street too early could lead to some expensive crashing noises from the rear; and some noises from the Fire Chief "doing his nut", upon seeing his 'bent' Aerial; just imagine the repair bills, for such a certified lifting device.
Certainly makes the case for the Tractor Drawn Aerial, with no overhang, and the rear Tillerman to watch out for and look after the rear end.
Hi Pat! LOL! Fire Chief "doing his nut"!That reminds my, of what happend in Nynäshamn (province Stockholm). They had changed from a Laddertruck, to a Hp-truck.It was longer, and one day, one of the drivers forget it. The door on the left side followed with the Hp out the frontyard!! Anders F. Sweden.
