Dennis F28 Returns home

This picture was taken on 27/09/09 and shows our Dennis F28 Water Tender outside Paulton Fire Station which was its home station from 1961 until 1979. The station which was built in 1938 is actually in Paulton although it reads Clutton Rural District Fire Station above the doors which would have been the area it covered when first built. Its still in use today with Avon Fire Brigade. It was part of Somerset Fire brigade until 1974 when the County of Avon was formed.

We have never had any problems with the hydrovac system. We had to do the rubbers in the front and rear wheel cylinders but they bled up fine and we haven't had any problems since. Jason Lester who is a contributor on this site is quite knowledgeable about the Dennis f28's so it might be worth contacting him. We had an ex Wiltshire mechanic on board our Dennis this year when we had to do an emergency stop. He was quite impressed with the brakes, the Dennis pulled up in a straight line and he said he would give it about 90% braking efficieny which he would be happy with if it was a machine on the run.

I drove an F28 pump escape in the late sixties/early seventies at Dogsthorpe station Peterborough, the mechanics fitted a double servo system wherein as far as I remember one servo pressured the other giving much more braking power, the traffic then was starting to become a problem and brake improvements were really necessary. The machine was later converted to water tender ladder with a Lacon as was the fashion, and later passed to the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade.Whilst in their possession it was rolled down an embankment of the River Nene into a field and was taken out of service. The number plate which I am sure was REG 492 was ceremoniously hung upside down on two small chains behind the bar in Dogsthorpe!
