AEC Regent ex South Shields.

This former South Shields AEC Regent 3 is very well known in the NE of England. It's a beautiful machine, and is seen here with suitable company at the (wet) Kirkleatham Hall Rally in July 96.

Hi,
I'd like to ask a favour of Chris seeing he's posted a couple of shots of this great old AEC. I have no way of knowing if he is familiar with the idea that most of these AEC Regents are not, in fact AEC, rather Maudslays, even the one that has attended many rallies, that being the AEC Regent Emergency Tender from London Fire Brigade
which is now recognized as a Maudslay. If
Chris could ask whoever owns it if he might look
closely at the manufacturer's plate and see how it is designated..Does the front marker show it to be an AEC or does it bear the Maudslay crest. Thanks a lot.

Bob,this appliance appeared at the 2008 & 2009 Preston Hall Fire Engine & Vintage Vehicle Rally and it states in the programm that its an AEC MK3 Merryweather Pump Escape owned by P Pearson.
I was'nt to happy with just that so done a little more research and found from a book in which its shown,it states its a 1950 AEC-Regent MK3 Dual Purpose Pump Escape. It carries an all metal 50ft wheeled escape, the appliance being built on a double-decker bus chassis, the bodywork being completed by Park Royal Vehicles Ltd.It remained in service(on the run)until 1968,and then was used for driver training. In 1974 the appliance was purchased by Mr Paul Pearson(current owner),who restored it back to its 50's look. The vehicle actually carries over 250 items of equipment from the same period as the appliance.
I don't know if anyone else can add any more information, but thats all I could find.Pete.

Certainly has an imposing, heavy truck look - is that a 'growler' on the roof, for Pav ?

The 'AEC/Maudslay Discussion' has appeared on other photos: is it a case of 'badge-engineering'; with the rigs coming from the same maker, at different dates, perhaps ?

Thanks for going out in the rain and capturing this great truck.

Regards, from Canada,

Pat, definitely roof 'growlers' on both appliances. The Commer at left near-identical to the machines we had in Auckland NZ in the sixties. Thanks for a great pic Chris,,

Carmichael built this type of appliance with their own four door crew cab on a number of different chassis. These included Albion, Bedford, Dodge and Ford as well as Karrier and Commer.

I am not sure what the benefit of this Carmichael cab was, compared to the more commonplace approach of having the crew cab built on to the chassis manufacturer's standard driver's cab.

The vehicle next to the AEC is KBT78E a ex East Riding Commer, she was the first appliance that I owned, does anybody know where she is today, I sold her in the late 1980's and I have not seen her since, I hope the old girl is still around.

KBT78E is a Commer QX with Carmichael's of Worcester bodywork, is a Water Tender and registered in 1967.
