Hi Bob, can you please advise me as to the bodywork on the breakdown lorry.

Andrew,not that it helps,but there was a similar Bedford at Carmarthen in 1973.

Andy, I cant help you with the bodywork, my records don't show it(so I presume Somerset FB W/S). But they show a Harvey Frost crane.

Bedford RL 4x4, quite a few of these were used by fire brigades particularly in areas were there was a requirement for an off road capability.

Andrew we had a similer one in Durham built from a Bedford RL with the same crane configuration but slightly different body work. There is a picture of it on here picture 16200 , it was built by Brigade workshop and designated as a B/L Breakdown Lorry The AFS had a similar purpose built machine similar to the military light recovery lorry also built on a Bedford RL No: 33401 I have the pleasure of looking after it at the moment

Most were ex Home Office post 1968 AFS disbandment. Cornwall and Clwyd being examples both remaining in Green.

The Durham breakdown lorry was built by Hampshire Car Bodies and the only one with a four door cab.

Clwyds was repainted Red with badge and CoCFS lettering. There were 9 of them for AFS ( I was told 6). This pictured obviously wasn't one. They were pretty similar to Army ones. 371ALC was based in Cheshire, 371 in Cornwall and 376 in Clwyd. Birmingham had one in yellow and Wiltshire had 372ALC, garaged at Warminster. 376ALC was garaged at Mold for sometime, though never used operationally. It was dispatched after a rather damning memo from fitters who tried, unsuccessfully to tow a Volvo WrL in with it.

I am sure that there was a Plate on the rear of this vehicle saying Tiverton Bodybuilders.
