Bristol,1971,ATV GLC 780,converted into a salvage tender at a fire with Bedford HCB pump and Bedford Oldland pump escape. Thirty or so years service for the ATV,not bad.
Could be a record, or close to it! Newcastle and Gateshead operated one as their ET until it was replaced by their now-famous Dennis in 1965.
I remember it had their delightful dark maroon and bright red two-tone livery with silver coach lines. Certainly the most elegant paint job on any Austin ATV! They also ran a salvage tender on a Bedford ambulance chassis at the same time. The rest of the fleet were Merryweather diesels by then, with three prewar Leylands still in service.
Hi Rob, you are a bit off there friend. Newcastle & Gatesheads ET was a Fordson 7V hose layer conversion, GGN643. The salvage tender, ANL314 was a former delivery van bought from a private owner in Northumberland. The Newcastle ATV was never an ET. It was a Service Van used by workshops. There were five post war Leylands in the fleet, three FK Cubs and two FT Tigers. Plenty photos of them here. I was brought up with them. Keep surfing, Ron
I think the ATV may have been standing in for the ET when I saw it. At the time, I remember thinking it did seem a bit small to fill that kind of role in a big joint fire service!
I never knew the FK Cub was built after WWII - the three Newcastle ones, EBB 302 etc, looked just like the FK Cubs built in the 1930s!
The fact remains that some of these Austin ATVs did last quite a long time in service after WWII. North Riding had several as front line appliances at rural retained stations for many years, and of course they turned up in various ancillary roles in many brigades around the country long after that.
Yes I remember all of those Ron, They are all well covered in your many books and magazine articles: I have them all and they take pride of place on my shelves. regards TED
Looking at the locker position, the grill on the side, the spotlights and the ladder gantry I would think it was a reconversion from a hosereel tender rather than a straight ATV.
Hi Neal, The hosereel tender didn't have the grill and it's controls for the water setup were where that locker is. This appears to be a stadard Salvage tender conversion. The locker housed a Scammell wheelbarrow pump mounted on a skid- with a vent grill built in. Wether it was ever a HrT or the lights and ladder were part of the salvage tender conversion ??? may be Bob knows ? But I have seen others. TED
Yes, the Bristol ATV was a hose reel tender at Avonmouth before conversion to a salvage tender. Wrington, Somerset and later Avon ran one with trailer pump until 1970.
