The area immediately around the town of Chamonix is famously ski country.

No wonder they used a 4X4 forest fire pump tanker to reach isolated mountain chalets, and rely on the tank contents to get the job done, especially in the winter...

There are now newer design French rural pump water tenders, which combine a structure fire pump water tender configuration with an off-road 4X4 chassis, but these were just a dream in 1983 when JP posted this picture!

They are still comparatively rare, as most fire stations outside large city conurbations tend to have one pump water tender on a conventional rear drive truck chassis and one specific off-road 4X4 with a bigger tank, but no ladders, BA, rescue gear or foam, and only a limited hose load.

Often, these are switch-manned by a single crew, especially at smaller stations who deal with a limited number of calls.

Rural structure fires sometimes get both, with the 4X4 tagging along to augment the on site water supply.
