These were probably the most common water tenders in use in France in the 1960s. As I recall, they usually had a 3000 liter tank. The apparent lack of locker space was compensated for by two one-man hose carts hung on the back - which are not mounted on this particular example for some reason. These each contained 200 meters of 65 mm hose, and were a standard feature.

The GAK came with a variety of two or four door cabs, which could accommodate up to eight crew members. Custom bodied chassis with smaller water tanks were also supplied to large city fire services with seating for up to eleven, including deliveries to the Paris Regiment.

The Berliet brand disappeared in 1980, after it was absorbed into Renault in 1974 and became part of RVI.

Nevertheless, they built good trucks, as evidenced by this rig's twenty years of service in Colmar.
