Preserved West Sussex Dennis D
Preserved Dennis D WTL, CBP 87L arrives at Worthing fire station open day in July 1992. This appliance was new to the one pump retained fire station at Henfield in 1973, where it remained all it's life until replaced by Dennis DS D557 DOR in 1988/89. Can anyone confirm if it had 2 blue flashing repeaters when new, or just one on the radiator grill like N reg Dennis Ds, and L reg Dennis F49s?

Eddie: Do you remember if these had the Perkins 6-354 diesel engine? Or, were they among those D series which had the awfully troublesome Jaguar 4.2 liter petrol engine?

As an L reg, I'd imagine the Jag engine was fitted. Not sure that the Perkins engine was an option on the early D series, although Hampshire retro fitted Perkins diesels into their fleet.

Hi Rob, definitely the 4.2 Jag, remember the sound very well as a kid. I moved from Arundel to Brighton in 1979 and have some good tape recordings of NCD 999G Rolls Royce B81 manual and XUF 999K jag, thrashing past where I lived near Preston Circus fire station, good memories. So I eventually would like to buy a D series or similar if anyone knows of any for sale? Eddie.

I recommend you look for a diesel if you can. I managed a factory in Belgium at one time which built light tracked APVs for NATO, which had the Jag engine.
We could reckon that 20 or 25% of them had engine problems - so I should avoid a D with that engine if you can!

Both CBP 86/87 on arrival to the brigade had no front repeaters CBP 86L had them fitted in later years l know because 86 l did it. They both had the 4.2 jaguar engines fitted. CBP 86L still ran on the original jaguar engine. Sadly CBP 87L has been scrapped quite recently in fact.

Hi all,
Interesting feedback thanks, does anyone know the main problems with the 4.2 Jag engine? I see on reg check that 86L was last on the road in 1991 and 87L in 2001, sad about hearing 87L has gone Bob, my quest to find 86L continues.
