Worthing Fire station 1978

Not the best picture in the world but i was only 9 when i took it - Worthing Fire Station, West Sussex, July 1978. Appliances right - left:
First WTL 0111 Dennis R133 LOW 307R
BACV 0141 - Ford Contact CPO 635L in Yellow
HP 0151 - ERF/Jennings SS85 - LBP 773J ( New to Chichester, then Bognor from 1975, and moved to Worthing to replace FPO 135H which was written off in Fatal RTC in September 1977)
Second WTL 0112 - Dennis F49 DPX 636L
Third, retained, WTL Dennis D GBP 998N.
Just visible in the rear drill yard is the dayglo orange bonnet of Range Rover Rescue Tender MBP 550P normally found in the bay in front of the BACV. Happy memories... Jon.

But, you have captured it, Jon.

My grand-mother lived in Findon; I got around Worthing and Littlehampton, on visits.

Thanks, for the memories.

Regards, from Canada,

Hello Jon,good to see you've finally added a photo of yours to the site on our old brigade. The picture is good mate, shows some classics from when I was in the brigade while you were still a baby in your mothers arms.Seeing this shot reminds me of a picture I took maybe a year earlier when for some reason the ERF HP with the reg-MPX 842J was on station and still in the yellow livery which I took from vertually the same position on Broadwater Green. It shows the new Rangerover/Carmichael RT in orange, the Dennis F49 still as 1st or 2nd pump, and the new 1977 Dennis'R'Series(LOW 307R).Also in photo is the Ford BACU in the yellow livery.
Jon,thanks for sharing this picture with us mate,I hope you'll now clean-up afew more of when you were a little boy of only nine that you may have taken during your prime and tender years.
Are you really sure you were only nine when you took this classic photograph mate?.

I find it interesting to see three different marques of Dennis pump at the same station. Classic fire appliances, one and all.

Don't put yourself down, Jon; it's a cracking photo.

Thanks Pete - i have scanned a few "old" pictures to go on this site, but the best ones are in albums at my parents house, and some seem to lose a lot of clarity when scanned - and actually i was only 8 when i took this picture as it was a week before my 9th birthday! It was Dads camera though!

Fire engine heaven Jon. I'm a simlar age but never photographed at Rhyl until 1983. First machine photographed was ODM446L Dennis F48/Dennis WrL. Boy she could frighten a young lad turning out with BDM949J, Bedford TK/HCB-Angus WrE. Can remember PDM 501, Dennis F25 WrT ex Mold turning out at Rhyl 1976 as a spare.

Hi Jon I'm a bit older than you, and remember the old Coventry yellow HP based at 01 Worthing in the early 1970s, think it could be the one you mentioned above FPO 135H which crashed 1977, I wonder if your parents have a photo in their photo album I would love to see the yellow HP again, as kids we called it the snorkel, think its call sign was 016, we spent many happy days at Worthing Fire Station in the 1960/70 but no photos. My father was a fireman for 27 years 1959-1986 based at Shoreham, then the Old Worthing Fire Station, onto Broadwater/Worthing when the new station opened about 1962, as kids we roamed around the station but soon learned to get out of the way when the fire bell went off for a shout, we were banned from the pole & watch-room where the ladies worked, we saw many fires & appliances around Worthing but never had a camera with us. Sorry to be cheeky asking for a photo all the best Karen Wilson (Packham)
