Newtown- Powys Fire briagde - 1985 lineup

The old Newtown fire station of Powys FB, in May 1985. The day-manned crew very kindly wheeled-out their three machines for me to photograph. From left to right:- RT (Ford "A" Series) BFO 308 V; WTL Bedford TK/CFE MCY 402 X; Bedford TK/Saxon WTL A 621 VTU. The new station was built about a mile to the west and this building became home to a window replacement company for a time but these days appears to be unused although still there.

Many thanks Chris. As a 6-7 year old child, I wandered down to the old fire station in Newtown many a time. Back then I live for a shot period during the hot summer on both the Treowen and Trehafren estates. Bedford TK/HCB-Angus PE EUN317D stood out for me as did the Land Rover/Brooks RT RCA138H and Bedford J4/HCB-Angus WrT OUN178G. Saw Bedford CA FoC a lot carrying petrol containers for topping up pumping appliances. The sell of canvas hose, proper fire engines and station cleaning products was an amazing thing. Now all gone. By the way, at the rear of the fire station, St John Ambulance housed a Leyland EA ambulance. Nadolig Llawen a Blywyddyn Newydd Da P'awb

I see that the three day-manned stations in Powys (Brecon, Llandrindod Wells and Newtown) are going to lose their W/T fire-fighters and become fully R/T in the near future. Not such a surprise in these days of cost-cutting and Mid & West Wales F&RS have the same pressures to save money as other Brigades.

Chris, that's terrible news, I understand Blaina are also closing! Do you know how many shouts these stations are doing? Having worked the day crewing system for some years, I understand the commitment given by personnel working this system, it can have a big impact on your social life, having to live close to the station and fulfilling your on-call duties. I fear we will see a lot more stations going the same way, as well as wholetime being reduced to day crewing.
