1934 Merryweather/Albion 75ft Turntable Ladder.

The classic of the Odiham Show 2009 surely must have been the attendence this year of this 1934 Merryweather/Albion 75ft Merryweather turntable ladder(Reg-CBY 218)which origanally served the Surrey Fire Brigade(S.C.C.),first serving at Wimbledon and then Kingston Fire Station.
The appliances served throughout the N.F.S.period in and around London during the London Blitz, and then went onto give another 18 years service before going out of service in 1963.The appliance is beleaved to be the only one of its kind.
The 1934 Merryweather/Albion TL is now preserved and gradually being restored to its former glory already having had major restoration work been carried out at great expence by the current preservationest-Alan Greenwood from Surrey. When finally finished,it will be another collectable and preserved appliance lovingly restored from a golden era in British Fire Engine Manufacturing history.

I do apologise for getting vehicle registration wrong,it should of course be-CPE 218.Also having just looked through a publication on Special Appliances,'The Fire Brigade Handbook'-Vol 1,it states this appliances is actually from 1935 and not what I was told by the preservationest 1934,and it also states the Merryweather Ladder was 70ft in height and not 75ft?.

Hey Pete,
you've brought another great, and rare, classic to us this time. What an interesting machine! There must have been a good reason for its short wheelbase and smaller ladder. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. And we owe a great vote of thanks to those who have kept her in great condition for the past 75 years and Alan Greenmwood for his skills, patience and financial outlay to continue its restoration. Great job.

Thanks Jason,it was good to see you at this years show at Odiham with your TL.Pity you and Alan had'nt got together for a photo shoot of your 1963 TL and his Merryweather/Albion that went out of service in 1963 together-or did I miss the opportunity to get that classic picture.
It was good to see this year 3 TL's in attendence and also the Essex Simonitor, that was another real classic.I'm now looking forward to seeing the Surrey get together at next years show.

Thankyou Bob,yea we do just occasionally come across a real classic and this must surely be one of them.It really made my weekend seeing this old-timer at this years Odiham Fire Show 2009.
The photo was taken at 7.30am on the Sunday just as the sun was rising, not to many people around and having attended the Show to display my model collection, and having had a bad nights sleep on the Saturday night I was up and about early for that classic picture, and this is one of them.
This years Show was the best ever, and it still grows and gets better each year and hopefully next year we'll see another classic.

The extension of the three-section ladder on CPE 218 is actually 72 ft (rather than 75 ft). There was also 'short' Albion Merryweather TL for Merton & Morden in 1937 (FPL 14) which was 75 ft in length but it was comprised of four sections.
