The Ford Motor Company was probably the first manufacturer to supply specialised fire trucks for the Armed Forses. The appliance photographed here is a 1942 Fordson WOT1 Foam Tender. The'War Office Type 1'(WOT1)and three versions of this appliance are thought to have been built.
Hundreds of these appliances were built by Ford and were designed to carry a crew of two and featured a Ford V8 side valve 30-bhp engine.
In 1946,the Ministry of Civil Aviation purchased this appliance and used it at Lydd in Kent, then in 1977 it was given to the RAF Fire School at Catterick where it was totally renovated by the staff. It is now beleaved to be on display at Manston Airfield in Kent, and is beleaved to be one of only three to exist today.
