Red! This is so much better than most J4 HCB water tenders, with their grey aluminium bodywork, looking like it was made of flattened-out old dustbins.

Only the UK seems to have fallen in love with this type of dismal body cladding, which was presumably quite practical but looked awful.

Rob, we are all entitled to our opinions. I agree the full red body work looks much better, than unpainted aluminium, but it is far from dismal. I personally have a dislike of many american vehicles, which in my view are sadly lacking in style. Still it takes alsorts, and if we all liked the same, and didn't post such a variety of pictures, this site would be a lot less interesting!

I was once struck by seeing fire engines responding to an incident on a rainy day in Edinburgh. The city is famously grey, the sky was grey, the streets were grey, then - of all things - even the fire engines were grey too!

If I had a camera with me, it would not have mattered if it had a colour film or not.

Cost was the main issue unpainted sides meant less maintenance.... with narrow lanes and overhanging trees the lot of many a rural station can see why - agree this utilty looks a little grim ...a bit of colour certainly improves the appearance of most appliances, our poor old Bedford looked like it had been dragged through a hedge backwards after the summer of '76' it was returned from workshops looking much better although not perfect once the rains came ...but can remember how drab our appliances looked compared to the solid red apparatus from the next county

Can anybody tell me if this rally at Escot Park is on in 2016 ?..it usually clashes with another event but I have that weekend free next year ?

This rally has been at Lympstone near Exmouth for the last couple of events.
It is usually every other year, so probably not in 2016.
