1908 Shand Mason Steam Fire PumpThe main attraction at the vintage steam & fire engine rally near Ottery St Mary last weekend was this beautiful 101 year old Shand Mason steam fire pump. Pulled by 2 Pershuron horses, they gave 2 great demonstrations throughout the day.

Although some steamers survived until WWII in smaller communities which could not afford to replace them, they had mostly been replaced by motor engines in the early 1920s, after the experience of WWI had demonstrated the usefulness and reliability of motor lorries - not to mention their upkeep being so much less than maintaining teams of horses!
