One of 22 independent volunteer fire companies which protect the capital city of Chile.

Uniquely, this country of 17 million has no full time or paid on call operational firefighters, and relies exclusively on more than 40, 000 unpaid volunteers.

The Santiago volunteer fire companies include many which were formed originally by different immigrant groups of varying nationality, and Co 5 was a German outfit. The old ladder truck, based on a Mercedes bus chassis, is a uniquely Chilean concept, carrying a huge assortment of ground ladders, rescue gear and accommodating between five and nine crew depending on availability.

These are still on the roster at several Chilean fire companies, including both European and American units, and more recent acquisitions carry very modern hydraulic extrication equipment.
