Was this one of the first machines to get the new livery? It seems a very early machine to get painted up - but then, it was only 13 when this picture was taken...
Hi Pete, I first saw this in this livery when it was at Yarm (retained) during a visit with the Fire Brigade Society back on 17th Oct 98. It looked clean and freshly done then, so perhaps it had just been re-furbished? You will note that despite the extra white embellishments the appliance is still in its old Cleveland County vermilion. The new darker red didn't come in till 2003. The only other E---KAJ seen on that day was E726KAJ which was a trainer at Middlesbrough, and this was in original Cleveland red. Perhaps 727 was the last one in service, and was refurbished as a reserve appliance. A current equivalent to that theory would be M813TVN which is the only Dennis SS WrL that i've seen in the post 2003 dark red. Its difficult to pinpoint repaint dates when you don't have access to official refurbishment and withdrawal dates.
I believe the L reg WrL's were the first to be delivered in the new livery. The older motors still on the run were then repainted in the new colours over a period of time.

Best wishes
