Chris, this is one of a number of similar vehicles used at some ministry of transport airfields. This particular one wsa at the fire training school at Stanstead before moving up tp Tees side. Anumber of smaller, remote Scottish airfields had them as did Bournemouth airport. I believe they are Pyrene bodied, but i am not sure about this.
These appliances were built on Bedford RLHC3 chassis. 13 GXE served at Isle of Islay and 14 GXE at Hurn Airport (Bournemouth). I've got a suspicion that they may have been built by HCB but I'm not positive.
Bob and Bill, you are both right and to confuse it more some were fitted out at brigade workshops. We had one example at Leeds / Bradford 1n the early eighties. Its pure lines were ruined by the addition of a monitor on a rear platform stuck on by Angloco in 1982.
Thanks for the information Bill. I have a rear view of a similar (if not the same machine) in a compound at Teesside Airport some time in the 1985-8 period. I'll post it when it's digitalised.
Teeside Airport had one of its own...a D reg if I remember correctly. It was modified and remained in service for a very long time. Its official designation was WT500(F) (Water Tender 500 gallon capacity with foam making capability) It was made by Angus Fire Armour Thats the one you will have Chris. Its the first machine I drove when I started at Teesside
Highlands and Islands Airport still have one of these in original condition in store at Inverness. 17GXE lettered Tiree Airport. Photo here if you want it. It quite clearly has an HCB plate on the back.
