Bedford TK Somerset Fire brigade DYD629J
This picture was taken by Bristol Bob and is reproduced with his permission. it shows Bedford TK DYD629J when it was on the run at Station 02 Bridgewater as the WRL. DYD627J served at Station 28 Shepton Mallet and DYD628J served at Station 05 Cheddar. DYD627J did serve into preservation and there is a picture of it on this site. I haven't seen it about lately though, does anybody know if it still exists?

George,from the info in front of me,it states the appliance(629)being at Stn#02 Bridgwater then going into the reserve fleet.It wasn't allocated actually to another station,but used as a spare.

George,in 1982 it was a reserve,but i dont know if it went to another station before that.

I have spoken to an ex shepton Fireman who recalls the following;
In 1971 (he thinks) there was a big fire at the Larkhill Rubber Company, Yeovil. This is shown in the Somerset Fire Brigade book and a picture shows Bedford Tk WRT YYC316H which at the time was on the run at Yeovil. Shepton also attended this incident and he recalls becuase the Yeovil Bedford TK was parked to near to the fire the paintwork blistered and the blue light on the drivers side melted. The next drill night at Shepton a couple of days after the fire, Bedford TK Wrt YYD842H which was brand new was brought up by workshops and put on the run that night without any running in or crew familiarisation. This replaced Shepton's Commer OYC683 and they were told they were lucky to get it because Yeovil wanted it to replace their Bedford whilst it was being repaired.
On a drill night in 1974 again unannounced workshops arrived with Bedford TK DYD627J to replace Shepton's Dennis F28 Wrt 19FYD which was then sent to Nailsea and subsequently transferred over into County of Avon Fire Brigade.
DYD627J had previously been on the run at Taunton (so that answers the question above and it must be the appliance shown at Taunton in the Somerset Fire Brigade book). When it was issued to Shepton it had just been repaired in workshops after an accident presumably when it was on the run at Taunton. Because the J reg Bedford already had higher mileage on it than the older H reg Bedford when Shepton got it which concerned the Station officer at the time, he decided that every six months they would swop the machines around so they took it in turns as being the first away Wrt. There is a picture in the Somerset Fire brigade book of a fire in 1974 at Evercreech junction which shows YYD842H on the run as a WrL. The above information is from my good friend Max Shore who served in Shepton from the fifties until the mid seventies. He is a priceless source of information.

Thank you for all this information. I now know what the other Bedford pump at Shepton was. In the picture of the fire at Evercreach Junction YYD842H hasn't got a slipboard on the drivers door and that had confused me about where it was based at the time, now I know where it was based then.
YYC316H couldn't have been damaged too much as I saw a picture of it at Castle Cary with the firemen in front of it dated 1984. It must have been just replaced there as it was a WrT in the picture, I know from living just round the corner at Cary at the time that the station had just a WrL and L4V. I know a TK Saxon was there by 1986, I used to love watching them wash the appliance by the horse pond!

YYC316H couldn't have been damaged too much as I saw a picture of it at Castle Cary with the firemen in front of it dated 1984.
