Can anyone answer this question for me? Due to the front mounted pump, I've been told, that if I owned one privately and drove it on public roads it would be illegal. Is that correct? Would appreciate some advice.

My take on this is that all fire appliances have to comply with UK traffic laws and Construction&Use requirements etc. They have to be taxed (albeit nil tax duty). So it would be legal. Also the regulations about overhangs are more stringent regarding rea overhangs. Cornwall L4Ps and appliances with Barton pumps have been preserved and are road legal. If in doubt pop in to your local VOSA testing station or speak to DVLA. I was led to believe that "overhang" regs etc. were only enforceable on retro fitted modifications, if registered initially in this form it is legal.

Gary, thanks for your comments. The fact that the vehicle I'm looking at is also MOT'd says to me that it can be used legally on road. I was hoping that there maybe someone out there who owns a similar vehicle privately could let me know if they've ever had any problems with the old bill!

I saw this machine the other week racing to a shout outside of Pwllheli, it certainly is very quick!!

I have also been told by and ex pwllheli fireman that this is shortly to come off the run and not be replaced
