Chris,

Great photo! There seems to be quite a few ex Grampian/North Eastern Fire Brigade appliances in preservation - At least 11 that I know of..

Jason, that's great news! I remember climbing over this as a kid! Can you tell me who manufactured the Ladders? Was it Metz?

Hi Jason good to see an old Scottish motor being preserved. Are you taking it to any shows? What F series is this? It looks like an F28?

Added by Grant Melville on 31 May 2009.
yes its a metz 100 ft ladder a work of art but mighty heavy!!

Looking at the Hand-wheels, is it "Armstrong Patent" aka "Handraulic"; or is it a powered Aerial ?

Great-looking truck; and good to hear from Jason, that it is still with us.

Jason,

How are you getting on with the TL? Any more photos or an update on the restoration....

Thanks

Andy!

i have been busy on this machine fitting new brakes and trying to bleed the clutch which is proving to be a pain!
she has run with her brand new engine although the electrics are proving a problem but we soldier on!
i will add photos as soon as i can

As I recall the F27 chassis was introduced in 1957 but Metz were building hydraulic ladders after 1959, replacing these chain driven designs which had been around for several decades.

This suggests that - unless this was a remount - it must have been built in a rather narrow time window in the late fifties.

Rob,

I don't think these were a remount? The previous TL Was Reg:LSA9 which was a Dennis F17? Its still around as is the old war time Leyland Merryweather TL Reg GLW410. The other one I know of A Dennis F7 Reg:GSA999 which had wooden ladders was quickly converted to a Pump Escape .

Your right about the F27 Rob. Had a Look at History of Scottish Fire Brigades sight, and it's an 1959
Dennis F27/Metz based at the old Aberdeen Central Station in King Street.

Grant:

Thanks. This makes this F27 with a Metz mechanical ladder a rather rare combination! There were also two F27 Magirus mechanicals supplied to Surrey as I recall.

So it is really important that Jason went to the trouble and expense of preserving and restoring it. A new B80, among other things, is like buying a new car...
