Thanks for this Des, although why yellow and not red! The reason given was to make them look less military etc! Then stick riot mesh on all the glass! Oh how I miss military logic....

Part of the Fleet of Goddess' that was sent to Northern Ireland during the last fire fighters strike. They where painted yellow to distinguish them from the standard army vehicles used in the province and fitted with window screens incase the troops on the ground came under attack. Two where based close to me in Bessbrook Mill.

They all have the hose reel bay have a locker lid fitted......cannot see the logic behind that.

Barrie, thats incase the go into a hostile crowd, ensures that the crowd cannot pull the reel off. Again for the purpose of being on the troubled streets of Northern Ireland.

They were painted yellow as, prior to the entire EP fleet going to Marchington, the NI appliances were maintained by the Department of the Environment hence the DoE logo on the side. The DoE "colour" was, and still is, yellow.

After the transfer to Marchington, it was decided that due to the security concerns in NI, the Appliances should remain yellow.

The wire mesh was fitted due to the high level of attacks on Fire Appliances. Almost all of NI Appliances are fitted with "bandit screens", a two piece perspex screen that can be pulled across in the event of the windscreen being broken.
