1951 Austin K4/Wilsden'A'Type Water Tender
1951 Austin K4/Wilsden'A'Type Water Tender.
This very unusual 1951 Austin K4/Wilsden WrT was one of 6 simular'A'types supplied to the fire service in Nottinghamshire being built on an Austin K4 chassis.The appliance originally had a light portable pump mounted at the rear,and it was designated to tow a trailor pump,but this one was later in life fitted with front-mounted pump.
This photograph was taken back in 1987 at the Pains Fireworks New Forest Fire Engine Rally at the Avon Country Club in Ringwood,Hampshire.
This Austin(reg-MRR 999)K4/Wilsden Water Tender is thought to be the only one left of the six that Nottinghamshire purchased between 1950/57 and served the brigade until 1966,but very little is known about its operational county history.
In 1966 it was sold to Billy Smarts Circus for fire protection at their winter quarters at Winkfield,near Winsor in Berkshire,and served for another twenty years before finally going out of service and into preservation in 1986.

a neat old truck, its lines remind me of the Maudslay from edinburgh and the bedfords and comets from birmingham. thanks for sharing on this site. The old photopic truck site has a shot of the five section leyland metz ladder truck,from nottingham; it is to be restored. i posted a shot of it with ladder extended but it didn't get published.

Stephen,thanks for the info on the 6 Austins that served in Nottinghamshire,maybe someone knows the stations the appliances were first allocated to in the beginning of their lives in the county?.

Hello Bob,good to hear from you again and thanks for your comments.I do have a picture of one of the Bedford'SB'Series PE's from Birmingham(they had 27)which they recieved between 1951 and 1956 but can't send in because its not my photo.Maybe someone out there can help on a picture of one of these classics from the 1950's please.Bob,whats the registation of the Notts Leyland/Metz Turntable Ladder please?,I may have a picture.

In my comment above I noted the other site had a 1938 Leyland-Metx Tl from Nottingham. The city noted is incorrect, it is from Northampton and bears the license # VV7200. Sorry for the foul-up. My computer is being replaced, so as soon as the new one is up and running I'll post a really good photo of this handsome machine in its prime.

the correct spelling for the bodybuilder is Wilsdon - my adding this comment will help the search engine freaks like me!

What a beauty - and so soon after the grim "Utility Furniture" for manufactured goods, post-World war 2.
Can anyone tell us something of Wilsdon - the builders - they have done a great job, with this Tanker.

MNN 999 and MRR 999 [at least] had Marshall bodies - perhaps Wilsdon fitted them out? One of them appears [unregd] in a Marshall advert dated 24/11/50. Marshall advertised regularly so it would be unlikely they would have used a 1949 vehicle in an 11/50 advert - that date suggests the Austin went elsewhere for finishing with delivery happening mid-1951. Were the KRRs exactly the same style?
