Tangye 700 GPM pump, one of several different makes which were common on the standardized wartime design NFS heavy units issued by the Home Office. All these units had a separate pump with its own engine to simplify manufacturing of large numbers. A few extra high capacity 1150 GPM versions were also built, but were much less common. They had six hose outlets.

Standard lorry chassis were used, mainly Austin, Bedford and Fordson.

In the background is a postwar 1950s vintage Dennis F8 pump from Derbyshire. These had the water tank installed across the entire body width above the rear axle instead of longitudinally, hence the absence of a side locker above the wheelarch. This may have slightly improved traction by increasing the weight on the drive axle.
