These air cooled engines were originally designed for military use, after the experience of water cooled engines' cooling systems freezing up in Russia during WWII.
But Magirus fire trucks with these engines were at one time very popular in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, and two even found their way to Glasgow. This Magirus probably dates from the 1970s. They were very tough and durable fire trucks, and many of them put in twenty or thirty years of service.
