Hi Pav, no railways did not go white because of this. There fire trucks were usual a bluish colour and when the old isuzu was replaced by a new one in 1997 it came from factory white and as they(SRA) went cheap with the body instead of going with a fire engine builder it just stayed white. If you go to have a look at any of the rail fire trucks they are all red/white

Pav, it is interesting that Bart refers to the vehicles from this unit as fire trucks, when his current manager and the CEO of RailCorp have both stated this unit does not perform a firefighting role. This raises the question, if the unit does not perform a firefighting role, why does it require "fire trucks".

Another interesting combination of British and North American styles.
BTW, in Canada and USA; the various railways had some interesting fire-fighting equipment mounted on railway cars - particularly in Forest Fire country, and where they had massive wooden bridge structures - all those cinders and embers from the steam locos, especially the wood-burners.
Before the roads system; the railways would help rush in fire-equipment, from other cities, particularly for a city experiencing an overwhelming Great Fire. "Mutual Aid" before the name was invented.

I would just like to correct Bart's statement about the colour of the rail fire vehicles. During the 1980's heavy vehicles operated by State Rail were sprayed in the corporate colour of blue/green, with light commercial vehicles being standard government white. The NSW rail fire service had both white and blue/green vehicles. During the 1970's the rail fire vehicles were pale blue in colour. The reason some of the current vehicles are red is because they were aquired second hand from the NSW Fire Brigades. During the late 1800's the railway brigade had red fire appliances, which were later sold to the then MFB after new vehicles were obtained from England.

Some years ago, I think when NSWFB still had it, I was out at the Greenacre workshops and was shown over it, very well kept truck. I was assured it was a display model, used for training occasionally, but sure enough a few weeks later I saw the Knight responding through Sydney CBD.
