This is the basic standard German DIN specification fire pump, which is designed for volunteer fire companies. It has replaced the ubiquitous LF8 units, which are now almost all either replaced or on reserve status.

With over 22, 000 volunteer fire companies in Germany, this changeover has been keeping manufacturers like Schlingmann quite busy!

The pump has been upgraded from 800 to 1000 LPM and the water tank is an addition. Although the standard is 600 liters, many companies specify a larger tank, as the 600 liter tank is often considered to be too small for useful autonomous operations.

In addition, some companies are specifying a smaller six person cabin, as they struggle to get nine members together in time to crew this first due unit.

Some are also being specified as HLF or LHF, as in Berlin, with hydraulic extrication equipment on board, and many fire companies continue to operate only 4X4 LF10/6s, like this example.

Rob is the portable pump a extra pump or is it the main pump?

Les: These all have a rear-mounted PTO driven pump. If they carry an additional portable pump, like this one, they are actually designated LF-TS, but this variant is becoming less popular because it reduces locker space - and there are different priorities now with lots of new equipment to find space for!

The older LF-TS did not have a water tank, so the portable pump was often the only way of getting any water at all on a rural fire, where the truck could not get near enough to a stream, lake or pond. Now they have a water tank, they can at least get started before other units arrive to sustain an adequate water supply...
