brandweer Roosendaal Dodge high pressure pumper

This 1943 Dodge T110L water tender with van Oers bodywork and Bean high pressure pump came in service with the fire brigade of Roosendaal in the Netherlands in 1952. In 1966 it was stationed at the fire stadion Wouw where it was in service till 1966. It was sold to the estate fire brigade of the Wouwse Plantage where it became the first piece of the collection. This is now a private collection of old fire engines in the Netherlands, just across the border with Belgium.

Hi Louis,
Thanks a lot for adding this truly international collection of Oldtimers for us all to enjoy: British, Dutch, German, and American most of which I had not seen before. Several years ago I spent several weeks in your country photographing many different fire trucks, old and new, and on my return to San Francisco some miserable little kid snatched my camera bag and scurried out of the airport with the exposed rolls and cameras. so all were lost. Now, every time I see photos of equipment from your country I'm reminded of what a wonderful mix of vchicles you've had over the years as I also think of that little creep. Thanks again.

Bob,

I assume that that little creep never got caught.... if you have special wishes from the Netherlands let me know and I (and maybe others) can post them to this page.

The Bean high pressure system was a US design and was a precursor to the high pressure fog systems which are now very common in Europe, although less so in some countries since the introduction of CAFS.

Although very effective on many fires, the problem with the Bean system was that it was not combined with a conventional low pressure volume pump. So if a Bean unit was first on scene at a serious fire requiring high volume hose lines, its usefulness was very limited.

My local volunteer fire company in Manhasset New York had a high pressure truck, but they soon found out its limitations, and it was switched to second due - really ending up most of the time as a very expensive personnel carrier!

The latest evolution in Europe is the French Cameleon system, as adopted on all BSPP pumpers in Paris. This means a crew can operate the 23mm hose reel with either high pressure water at 40AT or low pressure class A or class B foam at 10AT, as well as using the low pressure 65mm hoses for water, A foam or B foam.

There is even an automatic control panel, which decides on which (if any) foam, what proportioning rate, what flow rate and what pressure, depending on which type of fire icon the operator presses. It can of course also be operated manually, too...
