Works fire brigade Shell DAF foam tender

This 1971 DAF A1600 foam tender with Kronenburg bodywork was in service with the works fire brigade of Shell plant in Moerdijk the Netherlands. It was one of two units wish had no pump on it, it works form the hydrants on the plant. Nowaday it is in a private collection in the Netherlands, just across the border with Belgium.
The second unit is now in hands of the national fire museum in Hellevoetsluis the Netherlands.

Louis, this one was DA-71-25, I didn't know that Hellevoetsluis has a second unit of this type, but there is a similair unit No4 only from 1962 (VB-61-38) which had a twin, unit No3 (VB-61-39)both DAF A1600DA360 from Shell refinery in Pernis.
No4 is preserved in the De Rijke automuseum in Oostvoorne.

Louis, if memory serves me didn't these machines work with a very high hydrant pressure?

Added by John Stott on 08 March 2009.
John,

"Normal" pressure on the network can be 3 to 5 bars, once a hydrant opens the static pump(s) is/are activated and pressure can be 10 bars or more.

Thanks; John, Louis & Frank:

So, the Oil Refinery had fixed, or, Stationary, Fire-Pumps pumped to the Refinery's own internal Fire-Hydrant system. Opening a Hydrant would trigger the Fire-Pumps to start, thereby raising the Water-Lines' Pressure from 3 to 5 Bars (43.5 to 72.5 PSI) to 10 Bars (145 PSI) or more.

Makes sense - only the Foam Tank to move to the fire-scene; and you can have some pretty big and powerful Stationary Pumps to move lots of water.

Much the same idea as a Fixed Building Fire Sprinkler System.....

Makes for an interesting truck - over here, have to think in "Pounds-per-Square-Inch" !

Thanks 995, my only time with bulk fuel was in the RAF with Victor tankers but we depended on the machines pumps for putting foam straight into the bulk tanks and bunds. I saw the Buncfield site and was amazed at the amount of damage, the Dutch, as usual, do it right!
