This is a classic from the period, and nice to know its now in preservation.

Dad used to own GLW 474 which he bought from Aberdeen in the 1970's
He used it for a number of years before selling it in the mid 1980's
Did the HCVS Trans-Pennine run a few times
He has wondered if it is still in existence.

Hi Rob, designated a first aid saloon tender, , prototype on a Bedford chassis in 1936 - “British Fire Engines in Colour” by Arthur Ingram. 20 gpm Wynn pto pump and 5 way valve with hose reel and 80 gallon water tank. Reel could be deployed out of rear door each side or out of rear roller shutter door. All present and correct. Equipment same as post war ATV conversions ( which is where replacement tank and 5 way valve came from).

Ed: Ingram book says it was for Uxbridge fire brigade and bodied by Gregories of Uxbridge (not Godfreys!), then NFS and the Middlesex FB. Ended up as mobile canteen van

Thanks Peter. It’s always good to know about these historical vehicles, especially the relatively rare ones like this - and there were so many different ideas and specifications back in those days! One aspect which Interests me a lot is just how advanced some designs were when at the same time very old ideas remained the norm among many conservative fire services. This was true not only in the UK but also in many other countries. My favorite example is the 1904 petrol powered Merryweather pump escape for Finchley. It had a mid mounted 250 gpm Hatfield reciprocating pump, a soda-acid first aid tank with hose reel and carried a 50 foot escape. It was another fifty years before these features became universal on British pump escapes like the Dennis F7 and 12!

Some friends and I put GLW474 into reasonable order in 1973 when we should have been paying more attention to our finals. We all got rubbish degrees! As the brute was close to invisible with its tiny tail lights, I fitted some Consul Classic ones. But we did carefully box all the original components for someone who wanted it original.

GLW474 hasn't been taxed since 1978. Although the log book was last issued 1993.
