Dennis F38 Pump T00 928E Essex County Fire Brigade
Picture by kind permission of Roger Pickett of the Essex Fire Museum. Further to picture 14939 this photograph shows Dennis F38 TOO 928E, Station 25 Canvey Islands running as a Pump after failing to negotiate the Five Bells roundabout, A13 Vange in June 1969.
Whilst this is an intriguing photograph of the period, I should highlight that I believe members of it’s crew suffered serious injuries as a result of the accident as sadly this was at a time prior to consideration in design, that would offered improved crew safety.
It was as a result of this accident that this machine was subsequently rebuilt by Dennis to the latter specification of the F38’s that were supplied to Essex County Fire Brigade.

TOO928E was stationed at Essex County Fire Brigade Station Number 16 as a Pump Escape with a Merryweather Metal 50 feet Escape Ladder and I drove it from 1979 to 1980 when I was stationed there on the Red Watch from 1978 to 1980. As drivers we were responsible for routine maintenance on our machines. The PE had a 6-Cylinder Rolls Royce petrol engine whose carburetors had to be regularly topped up with oil. It had a 5-speed crash gearbox and was quick by 1967’s standards. In 1985 when I was teaching Fire safety to commercial firms I encountered it again at FBC chemical company north of Saffron Walden in NW Essex where FBC was using it as a first response attack for their chemical plants.
