1980 Dodge Emergency Tender Leicestershire
Through the 1980's,much of the fleet with the Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service were Dodge
with Carmichael & Sons playing a major part,along with Shelvoke & Drewry,and Fulton Wylie in
the bodywork/chassis of the majority of the fleet of appliances with the brigade.
This 1980/81 Dodge Emergency Tender photographed in 1991 was located at the old central
fire station in the City of Leicester and was a fine example of one of the special appliances
on the run from central during that period.

As you say, VUT 311X was at Loughborough, and this one - VUT 312X - was at Leicester Central. However, VUT 311X was disposed of in about 1999, and it was THIS on - VUT 312X from Leicester Central - that was converted into the Hose Layer. I'll post of photo of it in this guise.

I have a (purchased) picture of a Leicestershire Fire Brigade AEC Mercury/Merryweather ET/CU which is registered HBC945D and has aluminium bodywork and a white front. It was allocated to Lancaster Rd and Leicester Central between 1966 and 1985.
This vehicle was also featured in the 'People who help us' series childrens books in the one which covered the fire brigade, published by Ladybird during the 80's.
Apparently this machine is listed as being preserved, but Ive never seen it. Does anyone have any further info (or pictures)of this fine machine?

I used to drive HBC945D when it was on the run at Central, attending incidents all over Leicestershire as it was our main ET. All the time I knew it (1974-2009) it had the White front, top and rear side panels, it started life painted Red with aluminium bodywork. The Dodge ET VUT 312X replaced it around 1985, HBC 945D then awaited disposal at the Brigade Workshops, it was stored for a short while at Central after that and was collected from Central on a low-loader for transportation to the National Fire Museum at Weedon on the A5. I understand that it was left outside in all weathers and rotted badly; the last I heard of it, was that it was being scrapped.
The reason it appeared in the Ladybird book was because Ladybirds Books were located at Loughborough, Leicestershire. The book also contained pictures of other Leicester Fire Stations and our Control Centre.

I guess the AEC Merryweather had a crew compartment (most had crew seats) but this Dodge does not seem to - unless there were seats all the way in the back.
When you were there, how were these ETs usually crewed?
I ask because ET crews seem to have varied a lot as between Brigades in those days, anywhere from seven in London, down to three in Sunderland and a lone ranger in Cambridge!
