These volunteers respond from over 200 fire stations, compared to the other 80 full-time ones. In addition to backing up the full-time crews, they are often on scene at incidents first. This happens because they are sometimes nearer, but also because their very small fire trucks can get through some of the very narrow residential communities' streets and alleys - which can defeat the larger pumpers operated by the full-time brigade.

They typically respond in quite large numbers - often five to ten - so their limited individual capacities are compensated for by the sheer amount of units and crews attending....

I love the Japanese fire units they are very innovative. The small rigs are my favorite ones.

Sooty van!

Only sooty after the fire. Highly polished and quite immaculate at all other times, like all fire trucks in Japan, which manage to look pretty much brand new even after years of service...

These community volunteers seem to take just as much pride in their trucks and equipment as the full time professionals, and - like all Japanese people - are totally preoccupied with cleanliness at all times!
