Is this appliance used in HAZMAT operation?

Added by Bomba Boy on 31 October 2006.
I would think it would be used when there is a danger to the enviroment, maybe from toxic smoke, or chemicals.

This is Clevelands first Volvo appliance, and was new in 2003, and is based at Stranton in Hartlepool Cleveland. It replaced an appliance converted from a former Brewery Dray which operated in the same role. The event the vehicle is shown at, is 'Preston Hall Fire Engine Rally', which is held every July at Preston Park Stockton on Tees.
Cleveland are famous for their white fronts, this feature dates from 1971, and was first applied to a pair of AEC Mercury/HCB Angus appliances (AXG2/29K)which were new to the new build Billingham Station on Seaton Carew road, which opened in that year. Cleveland currently operated a very modern fleet consisting in the main of Dennis Sabre, and Scania 94D appliances for its pumps, with specials consisting of Landrover, Scania, and several of the earlier Dennis SS/DFS types.

Forgot to add to my previous comment, yes, this is what could be termed a 'Hazmat' unit, it is used at incidents where there are chemical spillages, and other dangers to the environment.

ow thats a beutiful truck realy is you cant fault volvo on looks a say they are much easyer on the eye than scanias VOLVOS ALL THE WAY

So why not just call it "HAZMAT" like the rest of the world?

Added by Steve on 12 November 2007.
Thats just for Hazardous Materials, this is for say protecting the environment, such as monitoring smoke output or something

I try not to use Americanisims when they are not required, In Cleveland we still have enougth trouble convincing the rest of the world that we are not in the state of Ohio!
I referred to it as a HAZMAT unit, because that was just a convienient word that the rest of the world would understand, given that anyone in the world can look at this site (and my comments) the vehicle's proper title is 'Environmental Protection Unit'
For other views of Volvos in Cleveland Livery, type in 'Steel River Blues' which was a TV programme shown in the UK a couple of years ago now, it was laughably inaccurate, (to a Teessider like me) in that it was supposed to be based around Teesside, and had a character who was obviously from North Yorkshire being discribed as a Geordie!! however, to it's credit, it did feature a Pair of Volvo FL6's (H874/5XYF)in the fictious 'Teesside Fire and Rescue Service'livery, which was based on the current Cleveland Livery. Although fictious, it did show what the Volvo FL6 would have looked like if Cleveland had purchased these instead of Dennis machines. The pair look extremely attractive, I wonder if Corgi will produce one on their Volvo casting from the 999 range?

I really hope corgi do that, although they cancelled this years oxford volvo release for some reason... I loved steel river blues, although I know it was inaccurate it was good for the short period of time it was on. Filled the void that was left after Londons Burning too. Cleveland I think is one of my favourite UK liveries after Hampshire and Essex, the white front is very attractive, especially on the Volvos.

why dont they do a tv sires like steel river blues but with grampains white trucks

Whatever you call it, and whatever colour you paint it, let's hope the crew members who have to use that side access door have very long legs!

If that is where they are meant to don BA sets and (forgive me) hazmat suits, then let's also hope they are very skinny and have some way of looking down as they get out.

We have all seen dozens of examples of Volvo pumpers with full-length rear cab doors, with a single or two inside steps. There is no excuse to have the bottom of the rear door more than a meter from the ground! I hope that the flap under it is a folding staircase, but even if it is, there are no grab rails, and there are no chassis components in that location which could not be relocated.

Vehicle later rebodied as the brigade's ICU and re-reg DDC1.
