Ermmmmmmmmmmmmmmm glad i an't backing that in ! ;-) a beast of a machine, and well done to drivers world wide who handle these beasts and all fire fighters world wide for you courage.

It must fit, if you notice the mirrors are folded inwards. Grzegorz that is a nice photo, the machine looks as though it will do its job well, is there a refinery or shipyard close?

That is one tight fit - the riding crew must be out on the bricks, with micrometers, measuring the clearances on each side, and "halving the differences"...... [;>)

Grzegorz; this Fire Station must have housed horse-drawn steam pumpers, hose wagons and ladders, etc in its time - guessing from the door-ways....

It is indeed an extremely tight fit - it takes a great deal of patience and skill to reverse it back into the bay...There was once a film on the web showing this daring operation, however, it is gone by now. Bytom's fire station (there's only ONE (!) in a city of almost 190.000) is still stuck at its historic location, in a fire station that was built in the 1900s, which indeed housed all generations of appliances. A new station is to be erected in another part of Bytom, but I don't know when they're finally going to move. The station is home to, among others, an Iveco Daily water rescue (with boat), Renault Mascott light rescue, a Steyr/Rosenbauer medium rescue, a brand-new, 2008 Iveco Magirus DL-37, Renault Midlum medium rescue pumper, 2 Jelcz heavy pumpers/tankers, and the Renault Kerax seen above. The absolute minimum of firefighters per watch is 14.

There is no refinery or ship yard around. Bytom used to be a major heavy industry centre, with 11 major coal mines and 2 steelworks. All but one are now gone, but there is still a lot of manufacturing in Bytom and neighbouring cities of the Upper Silesian conurbation. Two more Renault Kerax as the one above are stationed in neighbouring Zabrze, and, further away, in Sosnowiec.

www.bytom.pl/straz - photos of the station can be found under 'galeria'.

Thankyou Konrad for the information, that explains the need for a large foam tender! I hope the crews benifiy from a new station soon.

The beasts in action - firefighters from Zabrze, Bytom as well as many other cities are at this moment putting out a major blaze at one of the region's largest shopping centres, the 'M1' in Zabrze. 40 regular crews as well as fire service school cadets have been summoned from across the province to tackle the fire. One can see, among others, the Kerax tankers in action. Exploding fireworks, paint cans etc. from a DIY store made the operation a very difficult one. About 10 000 square meters of shopping space have been completely destroyed.
