Merc-benz ALP based at York fire station.

Showing the up and over capabilty of the ALP, this is an advantage compared to a Tl, but this machine seems to have suffered badly from a lot of mechanical defects which is bad give the facts it's a fire appliance and when it does work, what it can do.

John:

Metz and others build versions of their 23/12 aerial ladders with a hinged top section and a basket, and there are a lot of examples of these in service in many different countries on this site.

These do not have quite as much flexibility as an ALP to reach over obstacles, but they do come pretty close - and they are both much less expensive and a lot less complicated.

I have no idea how much more reliable they are but as they have a lot less to "go wrong", I suspect they really do spend less time off the run...
